Official version of Crest of Leadership

The Crest of Leadership (shown above) was designed by "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt as a replacement for the various local Council youth leadership training courses. The Crest was used by the BSA (and is STILL used by some 30 or so local Councils) to award to youth leaders for completing a set of individual training application requirements (similar to a "ticket" which Wood Badge participants must complete) in order to receive and wear the emblem. The emblem was originally designated as a "permanent" emblem but that designation was removed by the BSA in 1980 with the end of the "ALL OUT FOR SCOUTING!" leadership training emphasis.

There are several versions of the Crest out there. In 1981, the leadership of the Blue Grass Scouting Alliance Club at Eastern Kentucky University asked and received permission to alter the Crest and to use it as its official organizational crest. More information on the Crest of Leadership and the BGSA can be found on a separate page.

Boy Scout Uniform Moves From Cub to Boy Scout

What moves from Cub to Boy Scout uniform?

Joyce and Wayne both asked via Facebook's Talk About Scouting! discussion page:

"Can someone give me the final word on what exactly goes from the Cub Scout uniform to the Boy Scout uniform shirt? I am getting conflicting answers, especially about the Religion award and the Arrow of Light.:

Joyce and Wayne...I don't know if you've gotten an answer...Here's the answer:

There are several items which transfers (moves) from the Cub Scout uniform to the Boy Scout uniform. From left to right:

LEFT SHOULDER:Council Shoulder patch emblem along with unit number emblem if the unit number of the Boy Scout Troop is the same as the Cub Scout Pack.

LEFT SHOULDER/POCKET: World Crest emblem (if one is no pre-sewn on the Boy Scout uniform) is worm centered halfway between top edge of uniform shirt and top edge of pocket. Highest year (tenure) pin earned. ANY BSA "square knot insignia" earned or received as a Cub Scout or WEBELOS Cub Scout. These items are worn in the same places on the Boy Scout uniform shirt as they are on the Cub Scout uniform shirt -- square knot insignia centered above the top edge of the left pocket; year pin and backing worn centered above the button and above the top edge of the square knot insignia.

If a Cub Scout earned a youth religious emblem as a Cub or WEBELOS Cub Scout, he is entitled to wear the purple and silver Youth Religious Emblem square knot cloth patch with either a Cub Scout or WEBELOS Cub Scout device centered on the knot emblem. He may transfer that knot and device to his Boy Scout uniform. When he earns or receives a Boy Scout youth religious emblem, he adds a Boy Scout program device to the knot to signify that he earned or received the Boy Scout version of his faith's religious emblem. See the devices page for more information.

Medals and medallions earned as a Cub Scout or WEBELOS Cub Scout should be worn only during formal events or occasions -- for instance the annual Blue and Gold Banquet, a parade, District or Council dinner or something similiar in scope.

The Arrow of Light, if earned, is worn BELOW the Boy Scout rank on the left pocket. This is different from where it is worn on the Cub Scout uniform, whereby the various rank and arrow points corral the pocket. BOY SCOUTS DO NOT WEAR THE ARROW OF LIGHT SQUARE KNOT cloth insignia item. The knot emblem is ONLY for wear by adults, who CANNOT wear the cloth or metal Arrow of Light emblem on their uniforms.

RIGHT SHOULDER: U.S Flag emblem (optional but recommended; most uniforms have the flag emblem pre-sewn to the shirt). Patrol medallion of the Boy Scout patrol the Boy Scout is assigned to. If the Troop earned a Quality Unit Award, the cloth Award is worn below the Patrol emblem. The Pack's Quality Unit Award does not transfer to the Boy Scout uniform unless both Pack and Troop earned the same Quality Unit Award in the same year.

RIGHT POCKET: NOTHING on the flap. The Cub Scout Outdoor Activities Award is NOT an "Order of the Arrow flap" and that location is reserved for such insignia when the Scout has qualified and earned it. If the Cub Scout earned an Interpreter strip, he may wear it above the "Boy Scouts of America" strip above the right pocket. NO PATCHES ARE WORN ABOVE THAT STRIP (or the Interpreter strip if worn). When the Boy Scout attends or staffs a National or World Jamboree or a recognized National BSA event (like the Centennial National Order of the Arrow Conference), he may wear that emblem above the "Boy Scouts of America" strip.

Just like with Cub Scouting, a Boy Scout may wear ONE insignia piece of their choosing centered on the right pocket of the uniform shirt. The patch should not exceed the dimensions of the uniform pocket.

Hope this helps with determining which items can be "transferred to" the Boy Scout uniform.

Everything else should go on a blanket, jacket, vest or other item which the Scout will treasure as time goes onward.
