Old Den Mother's Award Medal
Sometimes, our Scouters find old insignia that forces me to look into old books and literature to find the background of. That's in the case of the following:
Don De Young writes and asked:
You have an idea as to what this is?? I plan on bidding on it on ebay.
Den Mother Award
That item IS a find, Don!!
What you have purchased is the forerunner to the Den Mother Training Award, simply called "The Den Mother Award".
Den Mother Training Award knot emblem (discontinued)
Wanna know where the green square knot on blue came from?? That ribbon color.
The square knot wasn't authorized for the award until really later onward, but that's what they based the color on.
The earlier Den Mother Award wasn't so much a training award, but more of a recognition award (like what you're planning to do with it now). I can't find anything more from the books I've got here except it alludes that the award wasn't given out frequently.
Your medal is only the second one I've seen; the first one I've seen was ON a Den Mother (one of my Den Mothers, an old black woman named Nancy Spears; she had been a Den Mom since 1948!!)
