Service to AmericaService to America is the BSA's contribution to the America's Promise campaign. In April of 1997 the BSA committed to providing 200 million hours of community service each year by its youth members in response to the President's Summit for America's Future. This commits each Scout to a minimum of 12 hours of community service each year through the year 2000. Service to America is a national program emphasis of the BSA.
![]() There are two versions of the Service to America emblem. The official BSA emblem is earned by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts/Varsity Scouts, Venturers, Sea Scouts and Scouters: Each Scout who completes a minimum of 12 hours of community service per year may purchase a Service to America patch recognition in 1998 (segments in 1999 and 2000) from his local BSA distributor or Scout Shop(tm) with unit leader approval. If 75 percent of the Scouts in the unit earn the patch recognition, then all unit leaders will be eligible to purchase a patch. (In 1999, it was announced that there would be no segments to this patch and the final design would include the dates 1998-2000.) The unofficial version, which was created by the editors of the non-BSA affiailated SCOUTER Magazine, is a lot harder to earn: ![]()
