ANYTHING may be worn on the red "brag vest." Anything up to the Scout and
of course his parents. So Jamboree insignia -- present or past -- may be worn on the vest at the option of the
the wearer. There is absolutely NO POLICY (written or otherwise) on what could or
could not be worn on the red vest. Likewise, if a Scout or Scouter is wearing a non-BSA
vest or jacket, anything may be worn on it as well.

2001 Jamboree Insignia
So, you came back from the Jamboree and want to know:
"WHICH Badge Do I Wear and WHERE Do I Wear It?"
Here's the information from the BSA's Jamboree Service:
*The OFFICIAL Jamboree emblem is a three-inch diameter emblem in six colors
depicting the BSA's logo, a portion of the United States flag, and the theme
of the 2001 National Scout Jamboree. ALL OTHER EMBLEMS -- staff emblems,
special area emblems, activity emblems, Jamboree Shoulder Patch (JSP) emblems
-- ARE NOT CONSIDERED THE OFFICIAL JAMBOREE EMBLEM.
*The OFFICIAL Jamboree emblem is worn six months PRIOR, during the Jamboree,
and FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD AFTER the Jamboree is over by youth and adults
who have PARTICIPATED OR SERVED AS STAFF MEMBERS of the Jamboree.
In other words, once you participated in or served as staff for this
Jamboree, you may wear the emblem on your uniform until you participate or
serve as staff for the NEXT Jamboree.
*The OFFICIAL Jamboree emblem is a registered trademark of the BSA. While
that did not stop some individuals from creating "knock offs" or "special
tailored versions" of the emblem, there are ONLY FOUR OFFICIAL JAMBOREE
EMBLEMS, as shown below:
 |
Youth Jamboree Participant Emblem |
 |
Adult Jamboree Participant Emblem |
 |
Visitor/Site Jamboree Emblem |
 |
OFFICIAL Jamboree Staff Emblem |
(Jamboree emblems: from top to bottom: youth participant, with RED Border;
adult participant/staff member, with YELLOW border; visitor emblem with BLACK
border; and staff emblem (given when feedback sheets are turned in at Jamboree or
Region headquarters) with GREY (SILVER) border. All other emblems, to
include those with the wording "staff" or "support", are NOT official BSA
Jamboree emblems!)
(this is NOT an official Jamboree Staff emblem.)
*If you VISITED the Jamboree at any time, you MAY wear the Jamboree visitor
emblem. This emblem, with a black border, is worn centered on the RIGHT
POCKET of the uniform by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers
and adults who visited the Jamboree. THE BLACK BORDERED JAMBOREE EMBLEM IS
NOT TO BE WORN IN THE PLACE FOR JAMBOREE EMBLEMS.
*If you PARTICIPATED in the Jamboree as a youth or adult, or served as a
member of the BSA's staff of the Jamboree (to include those military
personnel participating in the Jamboree as staff members at the Jamboree
headquarters, the Jamboree Department of Defense Joint Task Force, or as part
of exhibitors (the Army Adventure Area, the Army Broadcast Service, or at the
Merit Badge Midway, etc.)), you may wear the appropriate OFFICIAL Jamboree emblem
(youth/adult) one-inch above the "Boy Scouts of America", "Venturing - BSA" or "Sea
Scouting - BSA" strip on your field uniform. The ONLY THREE emblems allowed
to be worn in that position are the three OFFICIAL Jamboree emblems as shown
above (the black-bordered ones are NOT to be worn in this location!).
Also, the National Scout Jamboree - DoD (Department of Defense) Task Force emblem
is NOT to be worn as a Jamboree emblem. If worn, it is centered on the right
pocket of the field uniform or suspended from the button of the right uniform
pocket.
Youth members who have earned any or all of the five segments may wear those
segments in any order surrounding the official Jamboree emblem (this is the
reason why the Jamboree emblem is worn one-inch above the "Boy Scouts of
America" or other strip -- to allow for the segments to also be worn if
desired).
*JSPs (Jamboree Shoulder Patches) are worn by participant and staff members
for six months PRIOR to, during the Jamboree, and for six months AFTER the
Jamboree has concluded. Therefore, on Feburary 3, 2002, those wearing JSPs
should remove them and replace them with a current Council Shoulder Patch
representing the local Council *in which they are registered*. There is NO
EXCEPTION for "OA Service Corps members", "Trading Post Staff members" or
"professionals working as part of a subcamp or region camp" to continue
wearing the JSP after Feburary 2002.
(Examples of official Jamboree Shoulder Patches (JSPs))
*Likewise, special Jamboree Regional emblems worn by volunteers and
professionals participating in the Jamboree may be worn for six months PRIOR
to, during the Jamboree, and for six months AFTER the Jamboree has concluded.
Afterwards, those emblems also must be removed and replaced with the current
Regional emblem. Only those office-holders at the Area and Regional levels
and those professionals employed within that Region wear the Region emblem.
*If you or your Scout were fortunate to have received a special Chief Scout
Executive emblem marking the Jamboree, treasure it. I would *strongly
recommend* that you place it somewhere in storage as Chief Williams
distributed a very few of those emblems to Scouts, Scouters and visitors
during the Jamboree. I would NOT wear it; however, if you choose to wear it,
it is designed as a TEMPORARY patch and therefore should be worn centered on
the right pocket of the field uniform.
The special Chief Scout Executive emblem is identical to the official emblem
he wears as the BSA's senior-most professional member. The difference is
that centered on the bottom, above the words "Chief Scout Executive" are the
lettering "2001" and the Second Class scroll.
*Special "flaps" designed for the Jamboree were the rage again this Jamboree.
Order of the Arrow members may choose to wear the special OA flap from THEIR
LODGE or the current official OA flap representing THEIR LODGE. Like with the
Regional and JSP insignia, they may wear special OA Service Corps or Lodge
special Jamboree flaps for six months PRIOR to the Jamboree, during the
Jamboree and for six months AFTER the Jamboree has concluded. They may NOT
wear OA flaps from other lodges nor "spoof flaps" with the official uniform.
Lodge flaps are worn over the right pocket flap of the Scout, Venturer or
adult uniform.
*Flaps without the BSA's indicia should NOT be worn by youth nor adult
members of the Boy Scouts of America.
All flaps produced after 1976 have one or more of the BSA's "indicia" which
IDs it as an official Order of the Arrow lodge flap. Many flaps produced
before 1976 do not carry such indicia, and because of the thread design used
during before the present, can be easily verified as OA flaps. However,
present flaps produced by an OA lodge will contain one or more of the BSA's
indicia to make it "official" TO WEAR (you can collect as many flaps --
official and unofficial, spoof or special issue -- as you care to. We are
talking here _only_ about WEARING, not collecting or trading or possession).
The BSA's indicia includes the lettering "W.W.W." denoting the flap as an
official Order of the Arrow Lodge flap; the full-color or single-color
fleur-de-lis(some flaps may have the fluer-de-lis double or triple-stitched
into the emblem itself to 'hide it' -- if you hold it toward a light, one can
see the emblem), and/or the wording "Boy Scouts of America" or "BSA". Just
because the flap has an arrow on it, or is in the shape of a OA Lodge flap,
or has the lettering "OA" does NOT make it an OFFICIAL OA Lodge flap.
*ALL OTHER SPECIAL JAMBOREE INSIGNIA, to include special emblems given at
action centers, the Conservation area, the Merit Badge midway, the Jamboree
headquarters, purchased at one of the three trading posts, QBSA (the
Scout-owned radio station operating at the Jamboree), the Venturing Forest,
the Army Adventure Area, the National Guard Area, Hometown News, Scuba and
WaterPark, and religious service areas are ALL CONSIDERED "TEMPORARY
INSIGNIA" and should be worn, ONE AT A TIME, centered on the right
pocket of the field uniform or suspended from the right pocket button of the
field uniform. They are NOT to be worn in the Jamboree emblem location; nor
on the right shoulder below the US Flag emblem; nor above the left pocket.
These emblems will become collectors' items fairly soon and it is recommended
that they be stored instead of displayed. However, if one chooses to display
them, they are fine to wear on patch vests, blankets and other personal items
of the Scout or Scouter.
The National Scout Jamboree brought in thousands of visitors daily, to
include fellow Scouts and Scouters from all over the nation. It is important
to remember that the official Jamboree insignia is restricted to those who
have actually traveled to participate in or serve as staff members of the
Jamboree. The wearing of the black-bordered Jamboree emblem by everyone
visiting should provide a good compromise to those many Scouts and Scouters
wanting to participate but had to settle with visiting the premiere event of
the Boy Scouts of America.
By wearing your uniform correctly, you show others that the Jamboree was a
special event and you were a proud part of it!!
We hope that you had a safe trip to and from the Jamboree and that you had a
great time at the Jamboree.
Here's hoping to seeing you in 2005 "At the Hill!"
