"Hi, great web page. I have heard and seen on the internet that if you earned an Achievement Award at the 1960 National Jamboree in Colorado you could wear the small strip award below your right pocket. The National Council established this award and it's wear as a one time deal because it was the 50th anniversity of scouting in the US. "
Actually, the National Office established the Award and intended it to be worn as a PERMANENT AWARD for those who have earned the strip. The strip -- either the cloth strip or the woven strip (one OR the other, not both) was designed and should be worn IMMEDIATELY ABOVE THE LEFT POCKET (and above any square knot insignia or year pins) but BELOW the World Crest emblem. This is the ONLY location for this strip on the field uniform.
Cloth (left) and Woven (right) versions of the 50th Annversary Acheivement Award strips.
The BSA also provided that the SAME STRIP (which is why a woven as well as a cloth version was produced) can be worn on other items:
- on the red (or now blue) jac-shirt, two inches above the LEFT POCKET
- on the red (or now blue) cloth or nylon jacket, one inch above the ZIPPERED POCKET (or above the program emblem if worn)
The Transatlantic Council along with four other Councils (Los Angeles Area, Chicago Area, Circle Ten and Quapaw Area Councils) created a similar strip for the 75th Anniversary of the BSA. This strip is larger than the 50th Anniversary strip by one inch in lenght but is the same height as the 50th Anniversary emblem. They recommended and the BSA' National Uniform and Insignia Committee approved the wearing of the strip as a PERMANENT ITEM to be worn in the same manner as the 50th strip. A Scouter would be able to wear ONLY ONE of the strips.
The three-inch circluar cloth Anniversary Award emblem is NOT AUTHORIZED to be worn on the left side of the uniform shirt; it is considered a TEMPORARY ITEM.
Hopefully this will assist you, Jim....Thanks for asking me...
