Gold Star flag emblem
The Gold Star is a national recognition of the observance of a servicemember who gave his or her life in defense of our nation and its interests. There is information concerning the Gold Star Survivors (unrelated to the BSA) at this location.
In 1930, the Boy Scouts of America introduced the Gold Star emblem which was designed to be displayed on the unit's flag. The original stars were too small for the "large version" of the unit flag; so in 2001 the BSA redesigned the Star to be placed on larger unit flags. It was still too small so several volunteer Scouter had Gold Stars manufactured in the size you see here -- four inches tall, four inches wide.
While there may have been District and Council-level Scouters who have died as result of conflict or war, the BSA recommends that the Gold Star only be attached to UNIT FLAGS and not to District nor Council flags.
The emblem is designed -- then as now -- to be worn, six inches from the bottom edge of the flag and six inches from the "pole side" of the flag, as shown below. Additional Stars are worn above the first one in a line.

Flag with Gold Stars emblem displayed
The Gold Star emblem are not displayed with District, Council, Area or Regional flags. They are also not displayed with unoffical flags nor with activity flags.
The emblem is available for special order at the time a flag is purchased; or separately through local Council trading posts or Scout Shops(tm). They also may be special ordered directly from the BSA Supply Group.
