Merit Badges are worn close to the end of the right arm

No sash right now? No problemo! Up to SIX merit badges may be worn on the RIGHT sleeve, starting six inches up from the cuff on the long sleeved shirt; or as close as you can to the end of the shirt on the short sleeved shirt. But once you've earned that SEVENTH merit badge...ALL of the merit badges come off the shirt and onto a merit badge sash. By then, you should have saved up for one (or asked Santa or Memma to get you one as a gift!)

Boy/Varsity Scout Uniform General Info From Cub to Scout

What Crosses from Cub to Scout?

Rhonda wrote and asked:

I have a Cub Scout who will cross over to Scouts next month. I heard informally that there are some things he can keep and wear on the Scout shirt but the majority has to be put away. First, what items "move over" and what should I do with the ones that don't. Thanks!

Let's take the easier of the two questions to answer. Some families have chosen to frame their child's Cub Scout shirt in a similar manner as they would a district or "all state" shirt from their sports team. You could do this yourself with a 16x20 frame, some spray starch, a piece of yellow or white cloth, a piece of cardboard trimmed a bit smaller than 16x20 and a stapler.

Starch and iron the shirt. Cover the cardboard with the yellow or white cloth. Then after it is cool, transfer the shirt to the cardboard and staple down the shirt to the cardboard. Frame the entire thing and you are ready to present this to your former Cub Scout.

Instead of you removing his well-earned and received Cub Scout insignia and awards, purchase the following from your local Council Scout Shop(tm) or trading post and place them as indicated below.

On the LEFT SHOULDER, the new Scout should wear the Council Shoulder Patch (CSP) representing the local Council they are a part of. This transfers from uniform to uniform and can be purchased from your local Scout Shop(tm) or trading post. The Scout needs to purchase unit numbers on green with a tan background, to match the Scout uniform shirt.

On the LEFT FRONT, the new Scout wears the World Crest emblem and if they received the Messengers of Peace "ring" to go on top of the World Crest, you may transfer it or purchase a new one for the Scout uniform. The LAST Cub Scout year pin (not all of them -- just the LAST ONE they have received) is centered about an inch above the top edge of the left uniform pocket. If your former Cub Scout received a youth religious emblem, the purple and silver square knot insignia piece is worn (and a small Cub Scout program device which shows that they received it as a Cub Scout - that is placed in the center of the knot emblem...see here). This (and any other national awards which has a cloth square knot emblem to symbolize it) is worn immediately above the top edge of the left pocket. All of the various pins and items they received as a Cub Scout are NOT WORN with the Scout uniform... there will be new ones to earn and wear!

IMPORTANT! The Arrow of Light emblem is worn BELOW the Scout rank on the left pocket. That is the MOST IMPORTANT item which moves from Cub Scout to Scout!! You can purchase an additional one by showing the Cub Scout's Arrow of Light card at the Scout Shop(tm) or trading post...they are not supposed to sell you one without that proof!

On the RIGHT FRONT goes just about nothing right now...unless your Scout earned an Interpreter strip. A new one -- with the tan background -- should be worn there. Your Scout does not have to "re-earn" the Interpreter strip once they are a Scout -- this is something which can be moved from Cub Scout to Scout. It is worn in the same location -- above the "Boy Scouts of America" program strip (or the new program strip when it is announced).

On the RIGHT SHOULDER below the US Flag, the Scout should wear a patrol medallion. This IDs them as a member of a specific patrol within the Troop. You may get this from your Scout's Troop or most may be purchased from the Scout Shop(tm) or trading post.

Pretty easy, right?

Actutally, the idea, Rhonda, is for the Scout to "start with a fresh shirt".

This same information should be found in your Scout's Handbook, as well as within the pages of the BSA's official Insignia Guide.

Thanks for asking!!
